Bumper Crop: Saudi Kingdom Kicks Off Early Date Harvest

The National Center for Palms and Dates in Riyadh launched its early harvest campaign on Saturday, June 20, marking the arrival of Saudi Arabia’s first fresh date crop of the season.

Highlighting the seasonal calendar for early and mid-season dates, this new initiative is set to supercharge the agricultural sector. Arab News reports that the campaign will drive local marketing, unlock higher economic value, and fuel national economic growth.

Driven by a booming demand for local dates, the initiative seamlessly links markets with premium early-season varieties. By integrating agricultural tourism, the campaign is set to skyrocket market value and spark vital economic activity across the region.

“This campaign spotlights regional harvest timelines and celebrates our diverse Saudi date varieties,” stated Ahmed Al-Ayada, the center’s Acting Director General. He emphasized that boosting local consumption is a win-win that directly champions Saudi farmers and supercharges local trade.

The early date season spans from late May to September across multiple regions, including Riyadh, Al-Ahsa, Madinah, Qassim, and Hail. Reports indicate that key varieties hitting the market feature premium selections like Sukkari, Sagai, Ruthana, Barhi, and Khalas.

Concurrently, markets in Najran are experiencing a surge in trading activity driven by the arrival of the early harvest. This influx is effectively stabilizing local supply to meet demand while providing critical financial support to regional farmers.

This milestone coincides with ongoing technical support from the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture to maximize production efficiency, elevate crop quality, and mitigate pest risks.

Consequently, the harvest yields substantial economic windfalls for retailers, traders, and logistics personnel while generating vital seasonal employment opportunities.
