In a move to ensure administrative continuity, President Tinubu has handed Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi a final six-month mandate to lead the Nigeria Customs Service. This fresh extension overrides the upcoming August 1, 2026 expiration date of his previous term extension.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the development in a State House statement released on Friday, June 19.
Expiring in February 2027, the six-month extension allows Adeniyi to solidify the National Single Window rollout and ensure a seamless succession plan.
Throughout this transition, Adeniyi and the NCS Board will fast-track the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller, while enforcing mandatory retirements for officers hit by the 60-year age limit or 35-year service cap.
Adeniyi’s deep-rooted career in the Customs Service began in the late 1980s following his graduation from Obafemi Awolowo University. He climbed the executive ladder over the years, hitting key milestones as Deputy Comptroller (2012), Comptroller (2017), and Assistant Comptroller-General (2020).
After a brief stint as Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023, President Tinubu tapped him to lead the entire agency as Comptroller-General in June 2023
