Several Sustained Injuries in Kaduna-Abuja Train Collision; NRC Launches Probe

Panic erupted on the Abuja–Kaduna line Monday morning, with multiple injuries reported following a 10:30 a.m. locomotive collision near Asham Station. Passengers were jolted by the incident, described by the NRC as a mechanical “coupling issue,” according to reports, though no fatalities occurred.

The service came to a grinding halt after the train collided with another on the same track. The impact sent a violent jolt through the carriages, throwing passengers against seats and metal fittings. Medical reports indicate that several travelers sustained injuries, including deep cuts and bruises.

Passenger Sada Malumfashi recounted the incident on social media shortly after the crash, providing a grim description of the collision and the confusion that gripped travelers in its wake.

“Just dropped from the Kaduna-Abuja train. We heard a loud bang and the train jolted to a stop flinging people across. Passengers got hit and most are bleeding and severely injured. Train delayed for some 30 minutes and resumed to Kubwa. No communication from @info_NRC on anythin,” he wrote.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the incident occurred around 10:30 am on Monday near Asham. According to the corporation, the mishap involved a rear locomotive and a passenger coach, with preliminary findings pointing to a coupling failure as the cause of the collision.

According to the official statement, injured passengers received immediate on-site attention before being evacuated to a nearby medical facility for further treatment. Remarkably, no fatalities were reported following the incident.

NRC technical teams and safety investigators are currently assessing the scene near Asham to ensure compliance with national safety standards. This incident follows a similar crisis in August 2025, where a train derailed and overturned several coaches along the same route, highlighting ongoing infrastructure challenges.
