Two Customs operatives are now in police custody following a high-stakes chase in Osogbo that ended in tragedy. According to the Osun State Police, the officers were trailing “tokunbo” (foreign-used) vehicles through Dada Estate on Sunday when a driver was fatally shot.
In a statement released by DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, spokesperson for the Osun Police Command, the suspects—identified as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel—were confirmed to be in custody. Ojelabi noted that the fatal encounter occurred while the operatives were in pursuit of suspected smuggled ‘Tokunbo’ vehicles.
“Following the report, police operatives swiftly responded and apprehended the two officers,” the statement reads.
“Meanwhile, the driver of the said ash-coloured Toyota Corolla, one of the vehicles being chased by the Customs, was shot and confirmed dead by a medical doctor at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital.”
DSP Abiodun Ojelabi confirmed that police recovered several items from the scene, including a Beretta pistol (breech number 125024), 11 rounds of live ammunition, and an expended shell. Two vehicles—a white Toyota Corolla (Lagos: AAA 400 GQ) and an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla (GFQ 0982)—were also seized.
Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the fatal encounter.
Reaffirming their commitment to justice, the police stated that anyone implicated would face legal consequences. The Command encourages residents to support the case by sharing reliable information that could aid the investigation.
