Hormuz Risks: CMA CGM Imposes Emergency Surcharge

CMA CGM, a French shipping giant will levy a new emergency fuel surcharge starting August 1, 2026, due to a sharp escalation of hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz.

The emergency fee will range from $65 to $165 per container and remain in place until further notice.
According to an official carrier advisory, the sudden flare-up in regional conflict has abruptly reversed recent fuel price relief, driving up bunker costs across all global maritime trade lanes.

This operational shift directly strains corporate shipping budgets and threatens wider supply chain disruptions, including longer transit times and potential vessel rerouting. Ocean freight carriers have faced intensifying pressure in the Middle East for months; CMA CGM previously introduced conflict surcharges in March, followed by inland energy levies as security risks and insurance premiums soared.

Maritime analysts warn that sustained volatility in the Strait of Hormuz—a vital bottleneck for both container vessels and global energy shipments—could bottleneck international commerce and trigger broader inflationary pressures on transport.
