Operation Blackout: FBI, Ghana Forces Smash Cyber-Scam Hubs; 130 Arrested Over $10M Fraud

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has collaborated with Ghanaian authorities to dismantle an international network of cyber-scam compounds, resulting in the arrest and detention of over 130 individuals. The high-impact crackdown exposed nearly $10 million in financial losses and led to the seizure of more than 300 electronic devices used to target unsuspecting American citizens.

FBI Director Kash Patel disclosed the landmark operation in an official statement on X (formerly Twitter), characterizing the Ghanaian raid as a vital piece of “Operation Blackout,” a relentless global offensive engineered to demolish organized scam syndicates. Investigators have already identified 89 victims linked specifically to the Ghana hubs, while a significant number of those detained were uncovered as human trafficking victims slated for immediate repatriation to their home countries.

In an official dispatch, Director Patel outlined the sheer scale of the disruption:

“Operation Blackout: this FBI’s global scam centre fraud demolition. Another takedown this week out of Ghana: Nearly $10 million in identified losses so far, 89 victims identified, 130+ individuals arrested or detained (including victims who will be repatriated to home country), 300+ devices seized.”

The FBI chief emphasized that these highly organized scam compounds are intentionally designed to prey on vulnerable individuals, often leaving catastrophic economic ruin in their wake.

“These scam compounds target American citizens and destroy lives – and this FBI is crushing them in every corner of the world. More to come,” Patel asserted.

The strategic intervention in West Africa is part of a much broader, aggressive global campaign under Operation Blackout. To date, the ongoing international initiative has successfully frozen and seized roughly $17 billion in illicit funds, intercepted an estimated $670 million in potential losses, and directly warned over 10,000 Americans before they could fall victim to the fraudulent schemes.

Summarizing the campaign’s monumental milestones, Patel stated:

“Operation Blackout totals so far: Roughly $17 BILLION seized. Hundreds of alleged scammers arrested. Thousands of trafficked workers freed. 10,000+ Americans warned before losing their money. $670 MILLION in estimated losses prevented.”

This cross-border operation sharply underscores the increasingly sophisticated, transnational matrix of modern digital fraud, where syndicates exploit border security gaps and traffic vulnerable labor to orchestrate multi-million-dollar scams. By striking the physical infrastructure behind these networks, the FBI and its global allies are actively cutting off the financial lifelines of international syndicates.

Authorities confirm that the investigation in Ghana remains highly active. With forensic specialists currently analyzing the 300 seized digital devices and tracing complex banking trails, officials expect further arrests and the exposure of additional fraud networks in the coming days.
