Tragedy at 30,000 Feet: Passenger Dies Aboard Nairobi-Lagos Flight

A high-altitude medical emergency turned fatal on Tuesday night after a Lagos-bound passenger aboard a Kenya Airways flight died following a violent mid-air episode, sparking a full-scale investigation by the Nigeria Police Force.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has confirmed that security agencies have taken over the case to unravel the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred during a routine flight from Nairobi to Lagos.

According to an official statement released by Kenya Airways on Wednesday, the medical crisis unfolded at approximately 9:20 PM, just 20 minutes before the aircraft was scheduled to touch down at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

“One of our passengers was found to be unresponsive approximately 20 minutes before landing in Lagos,” the airline stated.

Despite the cabin crew immediately administering first aid and executing standard emergency protocols, the passenger could not be revived.

“Upon landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport at 21:41 hrs, the aircraft was met by medical personnel, and upon further examination, the medical personnel confirmed that the passenger had passed away,” Kenya Airways disclosed.

Providing critical context on the incident, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, Michael Achimugu, revealed that the airline’s country manager briefed him early Wednesday morning before the case was handed over to law enforcement.

“The country manager had woken me up this morning to say their own side of the story, and the police will start their own investigations,” Achimugu stated.

Achimugu explained that the deceased was an “inadmissible passenger” who had been picked up from Madagascar after customs authorities there denied him entry. As legally mandated, Kenya Airways was repatriating him.

“The country manager said he was picked from Madagascar, after customs had earlier denied him entry into the country, and as expected, the airline that brought him into the country must take him back,” the NCAA official noted.

During the flight, the situation deteriorated rapidly. The passenger reportedly became severely restless and aggressive, posing an immediate threat to the aircraft and everyone on board.

“When he got into the aircraft, he became restless and aggressive inside the aircraft, wanted to enter the cockpit and later wanted to open the rear door, but was later tied down,” Achimugu revealed.

To neutralize the mid-air threat and secure the cabin, crew members restrained the passenger by tying his hands behind his back. However, the intervention could not save his life.

“But when he got to Nigeria, he was declared dead on arrival. I don’t want to preempt the police investigation, but they have taken it over for now,” Achimugu added, noting that the deceased’s family may request an autopsy as the investigation progresses. “I know the family may want an autopsy, but that is the current situation.”

Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Airport Command of the Nigeria Police Force, Muhammed Adeola, stated that detectives have already commenced rigorous investigations and have extracted statements from the flight attendants and the aircraft captain.

“Yes, it’s true, and investigations have commenced. It’s an issue of an inadmissible passenger, and the said complications arose on their way back. He was unable to breathe, and medical officers were alerted before the aircraft landed. However, upon landing, he was confirmed to have died,” Adeola stated.

The police spokesperson added that the remains of the deceased have been deposited at a morgue in Ikeja for a comprehensive post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, Kenya Airways has expressed deep regrets over the incident, stating that it is actively collaborating with aviation regulators, local authorities, and the bereaved family.

“We convey our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and apologise for any inconvenience this incident may have caused,” the airline stated, adding that it is treating the matter with the utmost respect for the privacy and dignity of those involved.
