Meth War: NDLEA Arraigns Nigerian-Mexican Kingpins as Marwa Vows No Space for Transnational Cartels

In a major triumph over transnational organized crime, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory operated by a sophisticated Nigerian-Mexican drug cartel in the Eziama community of Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area, Enugu State.

According to an official statement released on Thursday, September 24, 2026, by NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the crackdown followed months of intense surveillance and intelligence gathering. The operation led to the arrest of two local kingpins: Chukwu Obumneme Christopher (45, alias Brown) and Chukwu Georginus Monday (60, alias George). The duo allegedly ran the laboratory in a strategic alliance with Rodriguez Villanueva, a notorious cartel operative based in Mexico City.

Consequently, the suspects were arraigned before Hon. Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello at the Federal High Court in Enugu. They face a five-count charge encompassing conspiracy, the organization, management, and financing of a drug trafficking organization, and the unlawful possession of precursor chemicals used in meth production—offenses that strictly violate the NDLEA Act. Following their pleas, Justice Segun-Bello granted the agency’s application for an accelerated hearing and scheduled the trial to commence on October 21, 2026.

Also named in the charge sheet but currently at large are Celestine Ikemefuna Iwuchukwu, an individual identified simply as Uchenna (alias Uche), and their foreign counterpart, Rodriguez Villanueva

Investigations by a Special Operations Unit (SOU) of the NDLEA uncovered a highly sophisticated, transnational network under the cartel’s control. Intense surveillance conducted by the agency between December 1 and 4, 2025, tracked the movements of Brown across Lagos, Enugu, and Anambra States. These operations trail ultimately led operatives to the Obeagu compound, exposing a hidden laboratory engineered to manufacture methamphetamine in massive commercial quantities. Outfitted with improvised reactors and advanced distillation apparatus, the factory mirrored industrial drug facilities recently smashed by the agency in Ogun, Oyo, and Ebonyi States.

A thorough search of the facility led to the recovery of a massive cache of highly restricted precursor chemicals and processing agents. Forensics confirm the specialized chemical mix is consistent with a high-potency, P2P-based methamphetamine manufacturing enterprise.

A simultaneous raid on George’s family residence uncovered a hidden logistics warehouse containing key industrial processing components and essential precursors, further exposing the massive industrial footprint of the cartel.

Reacting to the milestone bust, the Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), reaffirmed the agency’s unrelenting commitment to hunting down every fleeing suspect linked to the network to ensure they face the full weight of the law.

He highly commended the Special Operations Unit officers for their profound professionalism and doggedness in smashing yet another international syndicate. Describing the Enugu lab bust as definitive proof that Nigeria will never become a safe haven for transnational drug lords, Marwa warned that the agency’s intelligence-led sweeps and robust global partnerships will continuously block every loophole exploited by drug barons, whether domestic or foreign.

Marwa concluded by charging all NDLEA personnel to sustain this aggressive enforcement momentum until the nation is completely cleansed of illicit drug manufacturing and trafficking.
