NDLEA Seizes N10bn Drugs, 401 Military Ammo in Palm Oil; Intercepts ‘Black Soup’ Tramadol, Arrests Kingpins Nationwide

As the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) intensifies its relentless crackdown on narcotics, operatives have arrested a 55-year-old Lagos businessman, Onuigbo Ndubisi Chinedu. The suspect, a prominent clothing trader at the popular Balogun Market on Lagos Island, was nabbed while attempting to export 3.30 kilograms of cocaine to the United Kingdom. In a desperate bid to evade detection, the illicit cargo was meticulously concealed within the false walls of cartons used for packaging foodstuffs.

According to an official statement released on Sunday, July 26, by the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, Onuigbo’s arrest on Thursday, July 23, followed the interception of his cocaine consignment at the Lagos airport export shed the previous day. The trail began when vigilant operatives neutralized the plot on Wednesday, July 22. Thorough profiling immediately led to the arrest of three cargo agents handling the shipment: Nkwor Onyekachukwu Justina, Adeleke Abiola Taoheed, and Ukanwa Grace Pilgrim. Their intense interrogation ultimately blew the cover of Kenneth Okakpu, the syndicate member who delivered the illicit cargo for onward dispatch to the UK.

Okakpu’s confession provided the vital breakthrough that exposed Onuigbo as the mastermind behind the sophisticated syndicate. This critical intelligence culminated in Onuigbo’s arrest just as he was preparing to dispatch a fresh consignment of cocaine to the UK.

Meanwhile, the NDLEA’s relentless dragnet also caught up with a 31-year-old entrepreneur, Emmanuella Chukwu-Edo, for her involvement in international drug trafficking. Operatives raided her Surulere residence in Lagos on Tuesday, July 21, following the interception of her 2.80kg consignment of ‘Loud’—a potent synthetic strain of cannabis. The contraband had arrived the previous day, Monday, July 20, aboard a United Airlines flight from the United States.

In another high-profile interdiction at the Lagos airport, the NDLEA intercepted a massive shipment of 2.24 million (2,240,000) pills of Tapentadol 250mg, boasting an estimated street value of over N2.2 billion. The illicit haul, smuggled in from India aboard a Royal Air Maroc flight, was uncovered during a joint cargo examination on Friday, July 24, following actionable intelligence meticulously processed by the agency..

This monumental seizure comes hot on the heels of another bizarre trafficking plot foiled on Wednesday, July 22. In that operation, vigilant operatives raided a Lagos courier firm to intercept a UK-bound consignment of tramadol cleverly buried inside containers of local black soap.

In a separate maritime triumph at the Apapa Seaport in Lagos, a joint examination panel intercepted an incoming container loaded with three vehicles on Monday, July 20. Upon close inspection, operatives uncovered a massive haul of 4,777 sachets of ‘Canadian Loud’—a high-grade cannabis strain—weighing 2,388.5 kilograms and boasts a staggering street value of over N7.1 billion.

Turning north, the agency’s sweeping dragnet crushed a weapon-smuggling conduit in Katsina State. On Wednesday, July 22, operatives on patrol at Baure, Safana Local Government Area, intercepted 30-year-old Mustapha Sani. A meticulous search revealed 323 rounds of live, military-grade ammunition—comprising 200 rounds of 7.62mm and 123 rounds of 7.6mm calibres—neatly concealed within his belongings.

In a parallel anti-arms operation along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway, NDLEA officers on a stop-and-search routine at Jere cornered another 30-year-old suspect, Abubakar Amadu. Amadu was caught with 78 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition ingeniously stuffed inside kegs of palm oil. Both gunrunners have been transferred to sister security agencies for deep profiling and further investigation.

Adding to the agency’s sweeping successes, a high-stakes raid in Edo State on Sunday, July 19, dismantled a major narcotics hub in the Ilushi community of Esan South East Local Government Area. Operatives stormed a local warehouse, confiscating a massive 1,286 kilograms of loose cannabis alongside 86 kilograms of cannabis seeds. The targeted sweep also led to the arrest of 45-year-old Ojore Onweze, caught red-handed with 60 kilograms of skunk, while 30-year-old George Agwumede was nabbed with 13 kilograms of the same illicit substance.

Sustaining this aggressive momentum, various NDLEA commands and formations across Nigeria actively drove their non-kinetic offensive through the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign over the past week. Operatives took advocacy and prevention sensitization directly to schools, faith-based centres, workplaces, and local communities nationwide.

Notable footprints of the week-long enlightenment drive included strategic WADA lectures delivered to students and staff at Government Day Secondary School in Sabon Wuse, Niger State; Government Girls Secondary School, Shekara, Kano State; and Otto Primary School in the Ebute Metta axis of Lagos State, among several others.

In his reaction to the string of nationwide breakthroughs, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd), highly commended the exceptional gallantry of the officers and men across the DOGI, MMIA, Apapa, Edo, Kaduna, and Katsina Commands.

The anti-narcotics boss noted that these coordinated operations have severely disrupted the logistics pipelines of international cartels and domestic syndicates alike.

Marwa explicitly charged the operatives—and their colleagues in commands nationwide—to aggressively sustain the agency’s dual-action framework. He emphasized that combining hard-hitting enforcement sweeps with proactive community advocacy remains the ultimate key to completely dismantling Nigeria’s illicit drug networks.
