“Data Is the New Oil”: NSC Chief Backs National Planning Bill at House Hearing

The Executive Secretary and CEO of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Akutah Pius Ukeyima, Esq, MON, FCILT, Ph.D, has backed critical legislative reforms at the National Assembly. Speaking through his representative at a one-day public hearing organized by the House Committee on National Planning and Economic Development in Abuja on Monday, June 8, 2026, the NSC boss championed key reforms aimed at driving national growth.

Representing the Executive Secretary, the Abuja Liaison Officer, Pauline Osasona, stated that the NSC fully supports the Bill. She noted that as a Port Economic Regulator and trade facilitator, the Council views data as a vital tool that enhances decision-making, labelling it new knowledge and “the new oil.”

The public hearing was hosted by the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Gboyega Nasiru Isiaka, FCA, FCIS. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, PhD, attended as the Special Guest of Honour, alongside other key dignitaries.

The open-access public hearing centered on a legislative drive to overhaul Nigeria’s data architecture by repealing the Statistics Act, No. 9, 2007. The incoming Statistics Bill, 2025, looks to ensure digital-era relevance and structural efficiency within the National Statistical System, establishing improved funding pipelines to foster global competitiveness in statistical data management at all tiers of government.
