The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has halted its tinted glass permit crackdown across the federation, citing the need to adhere to a standing judicial directive.
The Force has suspended its nationwide tinted glass permit enforcement, which was originally slated to commence on Friday, January 2, 2026.
According to a statement released on Thursday, January 1, by Force Spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the NPF has suspended the policy indefinitely. The pause remains in effect pending the hearing of the substantive suit or the vacation of the interim court order.
However, following a December 2025 court injunction, the NPF has suspended its tinted glass permit enforcement. The legal challenge was initiated by Israel Joe against the IGP and the police leadership.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the police have been at loggerheads over the enforcement of the policy.
Responding sharply to the development, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) accused the police of flouting a standing court order that restrains the enforcement of the controversial policy. The NBA asserted that the police announcement “amounts to executive recklessness” and painted the Force’s leadership as “lacking in respect for the court, the rule of law, and due process of law.”
Reacting to the NBA, the police said there was no court order declaring the policy unlawful or permanently restraining the police from carrying out their statutory responsibilities.
The statement added ;
‘POLICE WILL UPHOLD RULE OF LAW’
The Nigeria Police Force has acknowledged an interim court order restraining the enforcement of the new policy. A force spokesperson confirmed that the police have formally entered an appearance in the case and filed a motion to vacate the order.
The matter has been adjourned until January 20 for further proceedings.
However, according to an official statement: “In line with constitutional obligations and respect for judicial authority, the Nigeria Police Force has entered an appearance in the matter, raised preliminary objections, and formally applied for the vacation of the interim order.
“The court has adjourned the case to 20th January 2026 for further proceedings.
“Accordingly, and strictly in compliance with the subsisting court order, the Nigeria Police Force has placed the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy on hold nationwide, pending the decision of the court.
“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, affirms that the Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in upholding the rule of law while discharging its primary mandate of protecting lives and property.
“The Force will continue to deploy lawful, intelligence-driven strategies to address security challenges and safeguard public safety across the country.”
