Rainy Season Peak: NIWA Storms Abaji with Waterway Safety Campaign

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has intensified its marine safety and environmental protection campaign in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), storming waterfront communities in the Abaji Area Council with a high-impact public sensitisation drive.

This strategic deployment comes at a critical time, as the peak of the rainy season triggers heightened risks of flash flooding, rapidly rising water levels, and severe water pollution across the region.

Organised by the NIWA Abuja Area/Liaison Office on Wednesday, the aggressive awareness campaign is part of the Authority’s proactive framework to enforce safe navigation guidelines, champion environmental sustainability, and guarantee zero-accident operations across Nigeria’s inland waterways.

The strategic initiative directly anchors President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, reinforcing the Federal Government’s uncompromising zero-tolerance policy on maritime accidents and safety infractions.

Speaking directly to community leaders and residents, the Area Manager of the Abuja Liaison Office, Hajia Aisha Eri, lauded the consistent cooperation of the host communities. She firmly reaffirmed NIWA’s mandate to safeguard Nigeria’s inland waterways through a triple-threat approach: aggressive public enlightenment, strict regulatory enforcement, and deep collaborative engagement with waterfront populations.

Continuous sensitization, she emphasized, remains a weapon of choice in the Authority’s strategy to crush avoidable accidents, defend the aquatic environment, and shield the lives and livelihoods of citizens tied to water transit.

In a powerful show of support, the Emir of Kwali, His Royal Highness Alhaji Adamu Saba Aguma, threw his weight behind the agency, praising NIWA for bringing the safety crusade directly to the grassroots.

Labeling the initiative as both timely and deeply impactful, the royal father pledged the unalloyed support of traditional institutions to enforce total compliance with safety codes across their domains.

A united front of royal voices backed the drive, with the District Head of Kundu, John Dogole, and traditional rulers Mohammed Yusuf (Sarkin Tungbufu), Ayahaya Nassarawa (Sarkin Nassarawa), Musa Wabai (Sarkin Kutara), Musa Alanana (Sarkin Kwago and Padama), and Abdullahi Kwakwa (Sarkin Kwakwa) taking turns to praise NIWA’s aggressive enlightenment push.

In a unified response, the royal fathers collectively locked arms with NIWA, pledging to champion the campaign’s safety blueprint and drive absolute compliance among their subjects.

This grassroots offensive directly fulfills a nationwide directive from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola, who has mandated unrelenting, direct engagement with littoral communities as the ultimate strategy to lock in safety consciousness and environmental guardrails across Nigeria’s inland waterways.

Deploying full executive weight behind the directive, the Managing Director of NIWA instructed all Area Offices nationwide to treat this safety crusade as a top-tier priority, signaling the Authority’s aggressive drive to eliminate waterways accidents through a mix of public education, stakeholder alliances, and iron-clad regulatory enforcement.

The safety push does not stop in Abaji. The NIWA Abuja Area/Liaison Office is already primed to storm additional waterfront communities across the Federal Capital Territory next week, doubling down on awareness to cement collective responsibility for safer, cleaner, and sustainable inland waterways.
