Lagos Police Dismiss Viral Ikorodu Arms Arrest Video as Stale; Warn Against Disinformation

A viral video showing a major arms arrest in Ikorodu is stale and misleading, the Lagos State Police Command declared on Sunday May 31.

Refuting the circulating footage, police authorities clarified that the incident took place over three years ago and has no bearing on present-day realities. Security agencies have since issued a stern warning against the recycling of old content, stating that the deliberate spread of disinformation will be met with full legal prosecution.

SP Abimbola Adebisi, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, condemned the circulation of the old video, stating that presenting it as a fresh occurrence is highly misleading. He emphasized that such actions only serve to manufacture fear and needless anxiety within the community.

“The video currently circulating on social media platforms depicting the arrest of some Fulani men allegedly found in possession of arms and ammunition in Ikorodu, Lagos State, is an old clip of an incident that occurred over three years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Ikorodu or any part of Lagos State,” the statement read.

Residents are advised to ignore the clip and stop sharing unverified information capable of triggering public panic. Warning digital creators and social media users against peddling false narratives, the command stressed that anyone found deliberately manufacturing or spreading misinformation will face severe legal consequences.

“Individuals found deliberately spreading misinformation or fake news will be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with extant laws,” the statement stated.

Lagos State Police Commissioner CP Tijani Fatai has mandated the continuous deployment of police personnel and operational resources to strategic sectors. The security blanket covers critical entry and exit points, vulnerable black spots, and high-traffic locations throughout the state.

To fortify the state, the command is implementing these operations in collaboration with other security agencies, aiming to guarantee “the continued safety and security of all residents and visitors in Lagos State.”

Law enforcement authorities reassured the public that robust safety measures are firmly in place to protect lives and property, advising residents to go about their daily routines without panic.

The command further called for timely, credible intelligence on suspicious activities from community members, stressing that public collaboration is vital to maintaining lasting peace.
