Disaster Averted: Lagos Classroom Crumples, But Lives Are Spared

A structural failure at Odokekere High School, Ikorodu, sent shockwaves through the community on Thursday when a classroom block collapsed while school was in session. Despite the chaos captured in viral social media footage, authorities confirmed all students and staff are safe.
Emergency teams from LASEMA and LASBCA have since cordoned off the site for assessment.

The Lagos State Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS) announced Friday that the collapsed classroom block at Odokekere High School had been marked for demolition before Thursday’s incident, and confirmed that all students are safe.

The committee, which was re-inaugurated in November 2019 to upgrade school infrastructure, said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered the immediate relocation of affected students to nearby facilities to prevent academic disruption.

“The state government regrets the unfortunate incident,” the statement reads, providing a crucial update on the situation that caused panic among parents and residents.
The SCRPS further clarified the structural status of the building, stating:

“However, classified information from the SCRPS office reveals that the classroom block had already been marked for demolition to construct a befitting classroom edifice that will accommodate the huge population of students in the school.”
