The Bauchi State Chapter of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), in collaboration with the North East Development Commission (NEDC), has conducted a Cancer Awareness Campaign in Dungal community, Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
The event, held on Thursday, October 30, 2025, drew participants from the State health ministries, civil society organizations (CSOs), MWAN’s national body, NEDC, students, and members of the media.
In her welcome remarks, MWAN Bauchi State President, Dr. Ummahani Jafaru, reminded participants that October is globally recognized as Cancer Awareness Month—a period to intensify advocacy and encourage women to carry out regular self-examinations for early detection of breast and cervical cancers.
Dr. Ummahani urged women in the community to pay close attention to the health talks and seek clarification where necessary. She commended the NEDC for its partnership and reaffirmed MWAN’s commitment to collaborations that promote public health, particularly in underserved communities.
Delivering a free health talk on breast and cervical cancer, consultant obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Habiba Ismail emphasized the importance of regular breast self-examinations and prompt medical consultation when abnormalities are detected. She noted that “one in eight women is at risk of developing breast cancer in her lifetime,” highlighting the role of early detection in improving survival outcomes and reducing treatment costs.
Dr. Ismail also enlightened participants on cervical cancer, explaining that it is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which can be prevented through vaccination, especially among girls aged 9 to 14 years.
Speaking on behalf of the NEDC State Coordinator, Sulaiman Ibrahim reiterated the Commission’s commitment to supporting initiatives that improve community health and well-being. He expressed delight in partnering with MWAN to mark Cancer Awareness Month, encouraging the women to take advantage of the medical professionals’ presence for free consultation and screening.
Goodwill messages were also delivered by representatives of State health MDAs, CSOs, and community leaders. Our correspondent reports that the exercise will continue in the coming days, with MWAN Bauchi providing free cancer screening and testing services in Dungal community.
