The National Inland Waterways Authority,(NIWA), has concluded arrangements to clear a widespread water hyacinth infestation affecting the Ikpakodo and Ebutte jetties in the Ikorodu Waterways, Lagos.
Confirming the action, the Lagos Area Manager for the authority, Engr. Sarat Braimah, said the exercise was a preventive measure to curb the recurring menace of the invasive weed before it disrupts transportation and fishing activities.
” We have carefully studied the pattern and spread of the water hyacinth and decided to act swiftly to mitigate its impact before it causes disruptions to boat and ferry operations,” Braimah said.
She further explained that the operation reflects the commitment of NIWA’s Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, who has approved a nationwide contract to combat the water hyacinth menace and maintain safe passage for vessels across Nigeria’s inland waterways.
“I will personally be on the ground throughout the week to monitor progress and ensure effective execution by the contractors.”
A task force was deployed on Friday, October 24, to the two terminals at Ebute and Ikpakodo of Ikorodu waterways with heavy-duty machinery, including swamp devils, harvesters, and other specialized equipment.
Once the cleanup is complete, it would enhance safe navigation. It would also protect the livelihoods of ferry passengers, waterfront communities, and other people in the area. This includes those who routinely patronize water transport, jetty hawkers, and people who fish on that corridor.
