In a landmark move for urban security, the Federal Government has officially commissioned a ₦40.17 billion state-of-the-art CCTV Control Centre for the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos. Inaugurated by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, the solar-powered facility provides 24/7 real-time surveillance of both the bridge surface and surrounding underwater areas to curb traffic violations, speeding, and security threats
Speaking during the Sunday inauguration, Minister of Works David Umahi highlighted that the ₦40.17 billion surveillance hub is the culmination of extensive structural and pavement rehabilitations initiated in 2023. First conceptualized in 2025, the state-of-the-art CCTV system is specifically engineered to eliminate security blind spots, deter dangerous driving, and prevent suicide attempts on the bridge. Under the new protocol, dedicated personnel will monitor high-definition live feeds 24/7 to enforce speed limits and coordinate rapid emergency responses.
“When we came on board in 2023, we met a very terrible Third Mainland Bridge,” Umahi said, adding that the structure, along with Carter and Iddo bridges, required comprehensive re-evaluation and repairs both above and below water level.
Umahi further confirmed that the total overhaul of the Third Mainland Bridge, including the critical replacement of expansion joints, was personally mandated by President Bola Tinubu to extend the infrastructure’s lifespan and improve commuter safety. Beyond the structural upgrades, the ₦40.17 billion project introduces a comprehensive security ecosystem, including a dedicated surveillance boat and two Hilux patrol vans for the Nigeria Police.
“The goal is total visibility; we can now monitor every inch of this bridge in real-time,” Umahi stated, warning motorists that the days of unchecked speeding and traffic violations are over.
Supporting the new security paradigm, Federal Controller Olufemi Dare confirmed the hub is a pioneering achievement, powered entirely by an independent energy grid. The substantial ₦40.17 billion investment delivers more than just CCTV; it encompasses 240 solar panels, 10 inverters, 1,268 solar-powered streetlights, and a reliable water source. With ₦36 billion already disbursed, this milestone marks the completion of the project’s crucial first phase, paving the way for future expansions
