A tragic collision involving two commercial buses on Ikorodu Road, Lagos State, has claimed two lives, including an eight-month-old infant girl.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), which responded to the scene, confirmed the fatalities.
According to an official statement, the crash happened Sunday, December 14, opposite Olabode House, situated between the Anthony and Obanikoro areas.
According to initial investigations, a red Tata commercial bus, traveling inbound from Palmgroove towards Anthony, reportedly lost control, crossed the median barrier, and collided head-on with a Volkswagen commercial bus heading in the opposite direction towards Palmgroove.
The agency affirmed the human toll of the collision: a woman died instantly at the scene, while the eight-month-old infant later succumbed to the severe injuries sustained in the crash.
Beyond the fatalities, 10 other individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The agency confirmed that all injured parties, including both drivers, were successfully rescued from the wreckage.
Six passengers were extracted from the Volkswagen bus and four from the Tata bus. The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) swiftly transported them to nearby hospitals for medical attention, while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit evacuated the bodies of the deceased.
With security secured by officers from the Ilupeju Police Division, LASTMA officials and public volunteers cordoned off the scene, managing traffic and clearing the wrecked vehicles from the expressway.
However, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki extended his sympathies to the families affected, especially the infant’s mother, who is currently receiving medical care for serious injuries. He used the tragic incident as a call to action, cautioning commercial drivers against speeding and emphasizing the critical need for roadworthy vehicles across Lagos state.
