The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) is strategically securing its long-term future by building a robust leadership pipeline. The organization recently launched a targeted succession-planning workshop designed specifically for its middle-level managers in Lagos.
Akutah Pius Ukeyima, Esq, MON, FCILT, Ph.D, Executive Secretary/ CEO of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, highlighted the initiative as a crucial step to bridge looming leadership gaps. He emphasized that this program ensures the Council remains fully prepared for evolving organizational demands and challenges within the maritime sector.
Represented at the workshop by Mrs. Ify Okolue, Director of the Consumer Affairs Department, the CEO articulated the Council’s clear vision: cultivating “competent, confident, and future-ready” leaders.
“We need a deliberate, structured, and merit-driven process to identify the next generation of leaders for the Council,” he stated in his address.
Mustapha Zubairu, Director of Human Resources Management, further underlined the critical need for this initiative. He noted that robust succession planning is vital as senior-level retirements create ongoing gaps, ensuring seamless continuity of operations and guaranteeing long-term organizational stability.
A key discussion point during the training addressed the Council’s strategic future and regulatory role. Senior Legal Officer Joy Bridget Dimka, presenting a paper on behalf of Mr. Emeka Okereke, Deputy Director, Legal Services, spoke on the “Evolution of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council and the Nigerian Port Economic Regulatory Agency (NPERA) Bill.” The presentation underscored the NSC’s vital function as the Port Economic Regulator and made a strong case for establishing NPERA to solidify and strengthen oversight within the maritime sector.
This workshop strongly supports the NSC’s broader mission to enhance capacity development and sustain robust leadership across all operations.
